Behind the Lens

My Creative Process

I’ve had the opportunity to photograph exotic and luxury cars including Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, McLaren, Mercedes, Audi, Bentley, Genesis, and more. I look forward to one day photographing Bugatti, Pagani, and Koenigsegg. My clients are a combination of commercial groups and individual owners. I work with commercial clients to provide clean, consistent, and eye-catching photos to promote brand recognition and online sales. I also provide high-quality images to print and display. Indoor "Studio" Shoots

For indoor "studio style" shots, I mainly use a 24-70mm zoom lens which minimizes the distortion of the vehicle and is closest to the perspective of the human eye at the middle of that range. The fine details (carbon fiber, stitching, logos and textures) are typically captured with my macro lens. Finally I use a wide-angle lens for the interior shots to show the entire interior in one shot. When lighting the car, I use between 2-4 strobes that are triggered wirelessly from my camera. Using strobes is my favourite technique as it give me the most control over how the car is lit. This allows me to emphasize the details and get consistent high quality images. Another technique is light painting with my strobes. By locking the camera down on a tripod, I take multiple exposures of the car with the light coming from different angles. Combining the photos in post-production creates a single image that stands out.

Outdoor Shoots

Choosing a location that suits the car plays an integral role in telling the car’s story and making the image pop. I spend time browsing google maps (satellite and street view) to find potential new and unique locations. Once narrowed down to a few options, I drive to the selected locations to scout them out in person. Scoping out the site beforehand gives me an idea of what to expect for the shoot. Keeping a list handy on my phone allows me to quickly find spots on the go. My favourite time to shoot is when the sun is low in the sky, an hour after sunrise or before sunset, known as "Golden Hour". Alternatively, a cloudy day with soft light is the next best time. I also enjoy shooting in the rain or snow to add an extra dimension to my images. Getting wet or cold is worth capturing a great shot. When I have a camera car or multiple vehicles on the shoot, I take rolling shots (known as rollers) with my wide-angle lens. These shots are best taken on a road 2-3 lanes wide with minimal traffic. The resulting images give a sense of speed and will definitely catch your attention.

Gear and Editing

My gear includes a Nikon Z6II as my primary camera. My two most used lenses are the 70-200mm f/2.8 and the 24-70mm f/2.8. I use battery-powered Neewer strobes that I can take anywhere. A circular polarizer filter (CPL)is a must-have, especially when shooting outdoors, to minimize unwanted reflections on the car and is an essential part of my gear. All my basic editing is done in Adobe Lightroom Classic and my more advanced editing/retouching is done in Adobe Photoshop. I provide both Web and Print quality files.
